Law for Humans is a legal innovation consultancy that sits in the space between legal practice, technology, and evidence. Law for Humans helps legal sector organizations to use AI in ways that work best for them. We evaluate AI tool capabilities against your actual workflows, so we can advise you to buy what helps and drop what doesn’t. We are expert at finding the services you pay for that do not earn their keep, and building a clear off-ramp from them, so you can spend where it helps most.
Law for Humans works with legal education organizations to update, innovate, and improve what and how they teach. We focus on three things. First, we lead on competency frameworks: turning them into learning outcomes, assessment, curricula, courses, and JD programs. Second, we advise providers on how to respond to the urgent challenge of AI; our specialty is working with faculty to build their confidence and competence in AI use, from learning outcomes to syllabi to assessment and beyond. Third, we help law schools stay ahead of the rapid changes in the profession.
Law for Humans runs evidence-based, independent review and planning for legal sector organizations. Often this means reviewing a single program or project to judge its value, surface lessons, and chart a path forward. Equally, it can mean reviewing broader missions, mandates, and operations across a whole practice area, department, or organization.
Data strategy for the legal sector: collection, analysis, and clear reporting that helps you understand your work and serve more people. We design the data-gathering process, run the analysis, and produce insights you can act on, including visualizations for staff and the public. We are particularly expert at drawing on data that clients already hold to reach evidence-based conclusions that can guide them for years.
We build and tailor AI tools to your specific needs. Many off-the-shelf AI tools are powerful but of limited use in legal settings; many legal-specific tools are narrow in function or exorbitantly priced. Law for Humans bridges the gap. By adapting capable off-the-shelf AI to your legal workflow, we help your organization use AI to work better, smarter, and more effectively — without the friction, steep unsupported learning curves, or onboarding problems that vendors so often leave behind. Law for Humans draws on our human-centred, evidence-based footing to help legal sector organizations produce original, methodologically robust research, and to translate it into clear, actionable law reform recommendations. Whether the goal is a submission to a law reform commission, an evidence base for a policy change, or a white paper that shifts a debate, we craft innovative work that stands the dual tests of time and reality.
For courts, government, and non-profits: we offer evidence-based assessment and redesign of access-to-justice programs, with an eye to lasting, human-centred change. We help you see what a program is achieving, where it falls short, and what to change, so that scarce access-to-justice resources go further and reach more clients.
Law for Humans is led by Lachlan Deyong. His work pairs a legal background with AI, data, and human-centred design methods so the advice accounts for how the law works, how the technology works, and how people behave. He has held academic appointments at the Peter A. Allard School of Law (UBC), Queen’s, and Oxford, and co-founded Nomos Analytica, an independent non-profit legal research institute. While Lachlan leads projects, we bring in additional expertise as the work demands. Most projects draw on capabilities held directly; for work that needs expertise beyond the core, we bring in trusted specialists. Lachlan is a methodology nerd, who bridges the gap between the legal system’s tradition-based methods and the scientific method’s empirical, data-driven methodology.
